Silvia Pinal (born Silvia Pinal Hidalgo on September 12, 1931 in Guaymas, Sonora) is a Mexican actress famous for her roles in several of Luis Buñuel's movies such as El ángel exterminador and Viridiana.

She married several times to artists and politicians, among them Cuban actor Rafael Banquells who fathered a daughter with her, actress Silvia Pasquel (Pasquel is a combination of the surnames Pinal and Banquells). She then married Gustavo Alatriste, a businessman turned movie producer that granted her desires of working with Buñuel and fathered the late Viridiana Alatriste. She also married Enrique Guzmán a Venezuelan-born actor and singer who fathered her daughter Alejandra Guzmán, a singer. Silvia and Enrique hosted a TV show in the 1970s and divorced when Alejandra was still a child.

She then married a Mexican politician and become one herself as a member of the PRI party in Mexico.

She started her career in film at the age of 18 in the movies Bamba and El pecado de Laura. Three years later, in 1952, she made the film Un rincón cerca del cielo where she co-starred with legendary actor Pedro Infante and the Mexican Academy of Film awarded her a Best Supporting Actress Ariel for her role in this film . Pinal would later receive two more Ariels for Locura Pasional (in 1955) and Enemiga (in 1956).

After marrying Alatriste, a businessman who invited Spanish-born film director Luis Buñuel to direct Viridiana, a controversial film depicting a nun (played by Pinal) and her affair with the character played by Spanish actor Juan Antonio Bardem. This film is still considered the best of the cinema of Spain and won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival.

The Alatriste-Pinal-Buñuel team made two more successful films: El ángel exterminador (1962) and Simón del desierto (1965). Buñuel re-made El ángel exterminador with a French-Spanish cast years later as Le charme discrete de la burgueoisie which obtained the Academy Award for Best Foreign Film.

Career on television

In 1968, Pinal obtained a role in her first telenovela titled Los caudillos, a story inspired in the events of the Mexican War of Independence. With her husband, Guzmán, hosted a musical talk-show titled Silvia y Enrique on Televisa. In 1985 she produced a show that portrays viewers-submitted stories about women titled Mujer, casos de la vida real that became a success and it is still broadcasted by Televisa in Mexico and Latin America and Univision in the United States.

She acted in another telenovela in 1973 and there more in the 1980s before taking a 15-year break from these roles. In 1983, she produced Cuando los hijos se van, starred by her daughter Silvia Pasquel and Saby Kamalich. She returned to telenovela roles in 1998 with El privilegio de amar, the Best Telenovela of the Year, according to TVyNovelas. Her last two roles have been in Carita de ángel in 2000, Aventuras en el tiempo in 2001 and Amarte es mi pecado in 2004.

Career on stage

Pinal has also produced and starred in plays such as the Spanish language version of Mame. She then acquired her own theaters and named them Silvia Pinal and Diego Rivera and starred in Que tal Dolly!, the Spanish language version of Hello Dolly!.

In 2005, after a 12-month hiatus from stage roles, she starred in Debiera haber obispas ("There should be female bishops") of Mexican writer Rafael Solana.

Career in politics

She became a member of the Institutional Revolutionary Party and was elected to federal deputy, senator and member of the assembly of the Mexican Federal District. In these positions she played an active role towards culture and women's causes.
