Kajol Devgan, née Mukherjee (Bengali: কাজল দেবগন Kajol Debgôn, Marathi: काजोल देवगण, IPA: [kāɟol], ITRANS: kAjol), born August 5, 1975 in Mumbai, India) popularly known as Kajol, is a five-time Filmfare Awards winning popular Bollywood actress.
Background
Main article: Mukherjee-Samarth family (film)
Kajol comes from a family with a long history in Indian cinema. Her mother Tanuja is a Marathi/Hindi actress; Her father is Shomu Mukherjee. He is Bengali. Kajol has many cousins of which Rani Mukherjee, Sharbani Mukherjee and Mohnish Behl are also part of the industry. Her aunt Nutan, grandmother Shobhna Samarth and great grandmother Rattan Bai have all been influential figures in the Bollywood film industry. Her younger sister Tanisha Mukherjee recently started a film career. Kajol is married to actor Ajay Devgan. She has a daughter named Nysa. Her uncles are Joy Mukherjee and Deb Mukherjee.
Kajol's paternal grandfather Sashadhar Mukherjee was a film director and producer who had left a great achievement in the Bombay film industry. His wife Satirani Devi, Kajol's grandmother, was the sister of three great film personalities, Ashok Kumar, Anoop Kumar and Kishore Kumar. Kajol is of Bengali-Marathi descent.
Career
She left school and started her career at the age of seventeen. Her debut film was Bekhudi in 1992. It was not a great success at the box office. However, she went on to appear in many other films which eventually became a great box office success.
By Bollywood standards, Kajol has not appeared in many movies since her debut. From 1992 to 2006, she has acted in only twenty-six movies. This would be considered a full resume by non-Indian actresses, but in Mumbai, this is minimal exposure. Many of these of these movies have been indifferent performers at the box office -- however, she has also starred in some of Bollywood's most successful movies. The 1995 Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge has been so popular that, as of 2006, it is still showing in a Mumbai cinema, an eleven-year continuous run.
Kajol became known for her on-screen chemistry with Shahrukh Khan. She maintains a good friendship with the superstar. In fact, all five movies which starred them as a lead couple have been hugely successful at the box office: Baazigar (1993), Karan Arjun (1995), Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995), Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998) and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001). Films starring Shahrukh Khan & Kajol have grossed Rs. 2,32,28,59,156 making them the most successful pair of all times in Indian Cinema.
In 1997 she starred in Gupt: The Hidden Truth which was one of the highest grossing films of the year and she became the first female actor to win the Filmfare Best Villain Award, for her performance. She is also the first actress to receive the same award for the same film from the Zee Cine Awards in 1998.
She also made a successful screen couple with Ajay Devgan (whom she would later marry) in movies such as Ishq (1997) and Pyaar To Hona Hi Tha (1998).
After the successful Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham in 2001, for which she won several Best Actress Awards, she took a break from acting for five years. (With one exception -- she did make a special guest appearance, lasting only a few seconds, in the 2003 Kal Ho Naa Ho). Her daughter Nysa was born during this period.
She made a comeback in the film Fanaa in 2006, for which she won the Filmfare Best Actress Award, and became one of the highest grossing films of the year. She then made a brief appearance in Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna in the song "Rock n' Roll Soniye" which released in August 2006.
Television
In 2005, she appeared on the TV show Kaun Banega Crorepati (the Indian version of Who wants to be a millionaire?) hosted by Amitabh Bachchan. She was paired with her husband Ajay Devgan. They won 1 crore (10 million) rupees and donated them to a cancer hospital in Chennai. She has also appeared on Indian Idol, seasons one and two, as a guest judge.
She also appeared on her best friend Karan Johar's talk show Koffee with Karan with one of her other best friends and favorite co-star Shahrukh Khan on the first episode. The show was full of fun as the dynamic trio charmed the audience. Back again with Season 2 of Koffee with Karan, Karan's first episode started with a Kuch Kuch Hota Hai reunion. After almost a decade since his directoral debut Karan invited his two best friends Shahrukh and Kajol again for the episode. Along side them came Kajol's cousin Rani Mukerji.
Personal life
Kajol married actor Ajay Devgan on February 24, 1999. She is the mother of a baby girl, Nysa, who was born in April 2003.
