Juhi Chawla (Hindi : जूही चावलाلا born 13 November 1967 in Ludhiana, Punjab, is a popular Indian actress.
Early life
Juhi Chawla was the first child born to Punjabi parents Mona Chawla and a Dr. S Chawla. She has one brother named Sanjeev. She was the winner of Miss India title in 1984, later she won Best Costume Award for the Miss Universe contest in 1984.
Career
From beauty contests, she moved into film - with her movie debut being Sultanat in 1986. Her first big hit was Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak in 1988, in which she starred with Aamir Khan. This Romeo and Juliet story of persecuted teenage lovers was an enormous success and launched Aamir's and Juhi's careers.
The Yash Raj Camp proved lucky. She accepted a small cameo in Chandni (1989), to later be cast in the critically accliamed Aaina (1993) opposite Jackie Shroff, and then in one of her biggest hits Darr (1993) with Sunny Deol and Shahrukh Khan.
She won the Filmfare Best Actress Award in 1993 for Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke. Her pairing with Aamir Khan has been repeatedly successful with Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1989), Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke (1993) and later on Ishq (1997) becoming hits.
She has teamed up successfully with Shahrukh Khan too, delivering his first big hit Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman (1992) and then later on with Darr (1993) and Yes Boss (1997).
Juhi later turned producer and became the co-owner of a production company called Dreamz Unlimited with Shahrukh Khan and director Aziz Mirza. The first film to come out of Dreamz Unlimited starred both Shahrukh and Juhi and was called Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani. It was not a success at the box office and was followed by Asoka which starred Shahrukh and Kareena Kapoor. This film was also a failure at the box office. Their third film, Chalte Chalte was the first success for the company. Then, Juhi got busy with her kids and career and did not venture into production after Chalte Chalte.
Juhi has recently appeared in critically acclaimed films like 3 Deewarein, 7½ Phere and My Brother Nikhil. She won a Star Screen Award Best Supporting Actress for 3 Deewarein.
She was recently seen in Nikhil Advani's Salaam E Ishq: A Tribute To Love,in which, she has given yet another emphatic performance, despite a very small role.Juhi's forthcoming releases include Ravi Chopra's Bhoothnath with Amitabh Bachchan and another film called Swami co-starring Manoj Bajpai to be directed by Ganesh Acharya. She has nixed some offers which required her to play much younger characters and is accepting only those roles in which she get to play her age.
Juhi has been doing lead roles for over 20 years, despite the burden of marriage and kids, which is very rare in Bollywood.
