Jorge Rodriguez Mencia Gonzales Francisco Ricardo Lopez (born April 23, 1961, in Mission Hills, Los Angeles, California), more commonly known as George Lopez, is an American comedian, actor, and star of the ABC sitcom, The George Lopez Show.
Early life and stand-up
He was born to a Mexican-American family and grew up in the San Fernando Valley near Los Angeles, California. He was abandoned by his parents and raised by his grandmother--whom many of his jokes revolve around. He became a popular stand-up comedian, especially among the Latino community for his satirizing of Mexican-American life and culture in the United States. Much of his humor was drawn from the financial poverty of his upbringing and of the Latino community in general. He has released four albums of recorded stand-up comedy shows, including Right Now Right Now and Team Leader, which was nominated for a 2004 Grammy for Best Comedy Album. He appeared in The Latin Kings of Comedy, where he was special guest along with other top Latino stand-up comedians. Alien Nation in 1996 was his first album released of his stand-up comedy shows. His current stand-up comedy DVD is George Lopez Why You Crying?. He recently released "El Mas Chingon" in September of 2006. His new HBO Special premiered on February 24th of 2007 called "America's Mexican". The theme for The George Lopez Show and for Lopez's standup appearances is "Low Rider" from the album Why Can't We Be Friends?, by the band War.
Personal life
Lopez married Ann Serrano in 1993. Their daughter Mayan was born in 1995. In April 2005, he received a transplanted kidney from his wife. An episode of The George Lopez Show was based on this. It is also mentioned briefly in a Curb Your Enthusiasm episode, where Larry David seeks inside information from George Lopez about the "kidney consortium" and in the nickelodeon series The Naked Brothers Band by Rosalina.
With the debut of "The George Lopez Show", Lopez became the fourth-ever Latino male to headline an United States television sitcom. The others were Desi Arnaz, Freddie Prinze and Paul Rodriguez.
Conflicts
In a 2005 interview with Howard Stern, Lopez claimed that he and Carlos Mencia were involved in an altercation at a comedy club. Lopez alleged that Mencia appropriated 13 minutes of Lopez's material without permission for his HBO comedy special.
George attacked Jay Leno during an interview on radio station WOMX-FM in Orlando on January 24,2007. "He's the biggest two-faced dude in TV," Lopez said of Leno he also added "fuck that beezy". He also called him a back-stabber and said he can't interview guests very well.
