Rhoderick "Erik" Ramos-Santos, born and raised in Malabon, Philippines, emerged as the grand champion of the ABS-CBN program Star In A Million in January 2004. He is the next big thing in Philippine music, as far as male singers are concerned, is touted either as the next Gary V. or Martin Nievera. Erik Santos, winner of the much-coveted and most prestigious singing contest in the country, has been called that, aside from being tagged "the rising star," his moniker in Star in a Million. Now, the country's Prince of Pop has proven that he is indeed all that and more. As soon as he stepped off the stage from where he delivered the most amazing rendition of "This is the Moment" and received the winning nod of the most illustrious panel of judges, Erik Santos has been winning hearts from all over the globe through his heartfelt singing and versatile voice.

Early life and career

Erik never thought that his childhood dream of becoming a singer would come true sooner than he expected. His passion for singing started when he was still a kid in Malabon. His penchant for music has always been at fate's beckoning, with Erik participating in numerous small-town singing competitions. Although he did not always emerge as the grand-prize winner, his singing ability and passionate performances were definitely noticeable. Among his favorite contest pieces was "Pangarap na Bituin", by no less than one of his idols Sharon Cuneta. In school, Erik excelled in his studies, being the recipient of various academic recognitions and leadership awards. But as he progressed to his college education he continued to be triumphant in his school’s singing competitions.

Erik has been granted many second chances in his life, but by far the biggest was becoming the wildcard entry to the Final 10 of Star in a Million. He had a good start in the contest but got eliminated during the third week of competitions, when it was still a part of the Sunday noontime variety show ASAP. Nevertheless, his second chance came and his moving rendition of R. Kelly's "I Believe I Can Fly", made him worthy of the 10th and final slot for the semi-finals round. He forged ahead and kept on competing week after week. There must have been some magic in his chosen songs as his heartfelt renditions put him as one of the three grand finalists in the much-awaited ultimate showdown for the title of Star in a Million. "This is the Moment," a song from the musical Jekyll and Hyde, popularized by his other idol Martin Nievera, was his key to winning the prestigious title, and from then on Erik's music has touched the lives of many Filipinos not only locally but across many seas, as well.

Now, with record-breaking chart-toppers from his Platinum debut album (his first single Pagbigyang Muli has stayed on the #1 spot of WRR's hit chart for more than 20 weeks, along with his other songs filling up the charts simultaneously), sold-out concerts and an unquenchable demand for corporate shows, accolades from Awit Awards, Star Awards and Aliw Awards, endorsements for a bank (Bank of the Philippine Island's Express Remit) and a presidentiable, theme songs for radio stations, teleseryes and even movies, we are sure to expect the name Erik Santos to be part of the firmament of OPM royalty. For the boy who thought he could fly and touch the sky, the moment has definitely come. Erik has what it takes to make it big in the industry, with perseverance in his craft, humility on his side, and talent from the heart.
